Epidemic situation on highly dangerous animal diseases worldwide in the first half of the year 2014

According to the information of the World Organisation for Animal Health 1,715 outbreaks of highly dangerous animal diseases were registered worldwide in the first half of the year 2014.

Outbreaks of African swine fever were reported from Russia (25), Poland (4), Latvia (3), Lithuania (2) and Ukraine (2). Cases of classical swine fever were officially confirmed in Russia (3), Latvia (27) and Columbia (10).

The foot and mouth disease (FMD) situation worldwide is still unfavourable. During the first half of the year 2014 FMD outbreaks were registered in territories of Russia (10), Botswana (1), Guinea (2), Zimbabwe (3), Israel (2), China (2), Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (3), Mongolia (15), Tunis (77) and Republic of South Africa (2).

Veterinary services of Greece (11), Taiwan (109), Uruguay (3) and Republic of Congo (1) reported about rabies outbreaks. Bluetongue was diagnosed in Greece and Italy, 23 and 33 outbreaks, respectively. Six cases of vesicular stomatitis were registered in the USA. One outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was registered by veterinary services of Brazil and Rumania and Germany reported about 2 outbreaks of the disease.

In the territory of China 242 outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants occurred. The increase of the mortality rate due to the given disease was observed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Veterinary services of Greece and Bulgaria officially confirmed the occurrence of sheep and goat pox outbreaks, 29 and 2 outbreaks, respectively. African horse sickness foci were registered in the Republic of South Africa (38), Swaziland (2) and Mozambique (2).

Reports on lumpy skin disease outbreaks were received from Turkey (140), Lebanon (32), Iraq (16) and Iran (1). Rift Valley fever outbreak was registered in Senegal. Veterinary services of Mauritania confirmed 2 outbreaks of bovine contagious pleuropneumonia.

During the first half of the year 2014 the following highly dangerous diseases were diagnosed: Newcastle disease (Israel – 23 outbreaks, Algeria – 4 outbreaks, Sweden – 1 outbreak) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (Vietnam – 38 outbreaks, South Korea – 29 outbreaks, Cambodia and China – 5 outbreaks in each country, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – 3 outbreaks, India, Laos, Libya, Nepal, Taiwan and Japan – 1 outbreak in each country).

Apart from animal transboundary diseases outbreaks of Middle East respiratory syndrome, brucellosis, rabbit hemorrhagic disease, eastern equine encephalomyelitis, hydropericarditis, swine coronavirus enteritis, Q fever, swine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, equine rhinopneumonia, anthrax, low pathogenic avian influenza, fowl typhoid, bovine tuberculosis, bovine enzootic leucosis and porcine epidemic diarrhea were registered in 2014 worldwide.
